(Yicai Global) Oct. 18 -- Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry, better known as Foxconn, launched three electric car prototypes today as the world’s largest contract electronics maker diversifies beyond smartphones.

Its electric bus the Model T, sports utility vehicle Model C and luxury sedan Model E all debuted at the Hon Hai Tech Day in Taiwan.

Founder Terry Gou roared into the venue in a Model E that can accelerate to 100 kilometers an hour from zero in under three seconds and boasts a range of 750 km. It also features a series of smart functions such as doors that unlock automatically using facial recognition and interactions between the vehicle and its surroundings.

The 4.64-meter-long Model C, with a wheel span of 2.86m, can reach 100 km/h in under four seconds and has a range of 700 km. The car is expected to be on the market by 2023 and to cost under TWD1 million (USD35,699). The Model T is an electric bus that has a range of 400 km and a maximum speed of 120 km/h. Its battery can also withstand temperatures of up to 400 degrees Celcius.

“In the next two years, Hon Hai will bring to the industry more updates from its software and semiconductor businesses to allow the development of easy-to-use, highly efficient and high-performance electric vehicles,” said Foxconn Chair Young Liu. Foxconn is ready and is no longer the new kid on the block, he added.

All three vehicles were developed using the Mobility in Harmony open EV platform set up by Foxconn and Yulon Motors last year. There has already been big progress, the Taipei-bsaed firm said.

Foxconn has been very active in the NEV sector in the last few years as it seeks new business opportunities. It has invested in electric car startups Byton and Xpeng Motors as well as battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology. It also set up a joint venture with auto manufacturer Zhejiang Geely Holding Group in January to provide contract manufacturing and customized consulting services to automakers and logistics firms worldwide.
