(Yicai Global) June 25 -- German chemicals giant BASF is linking arms with Shanghai Jahwa United Co.,Ltd, the largest Chinese manufacturer of beauty and personal care goods, to develop new products using digital tools in a sustainable way.

The two parties will work on developing new bio actives and novel formulation formats to bring traditional Chinese medicine into the modern era, visualize skin research and digitize smart devices in a sustainable way, BASF told Yicai Global. It is the first time for a Chinese beauty and personal care firm to build a technological innovation partnership with Ludwigshafen-based BASF.

They intend to be the first in the Chinese market to produce personalized beauty products, such as 3D printed masks. They will collaborate on 3D skin cells, research of mechanism of action and supercomputer modeling.

“We could make breakthroughs in customized products in the future, through digitization and the creation of three-dimensional models,” said Alex Pan, chairman and chief executive officer of Shanghai Jahwa. “We combine our partners’ excellent formulas, mechanisms and packaging with our understanding of consumers, to create products that create value for consumers.”

BASF will use its expertise in ingredient development, testing and digitization to offer what Jahwa needs, said Zheng Daqing, senior vice president of business and market development at BASF China. Jahwa is the developer of some of China’s most popular cosmetics and skin care brands, including Herborist, Liushen, Maxam and HomeAegis.

The BASF Shanghai Innovation Park, which will be the largest R&D hub in the Asia Pacific region when it is finished next year, will also provide technologies, new materials and solutions for Shanghai Jahwa and China's personal care market, added Zheng.

Environmentally Friendly

BASF and Jahwa will establish a set of standards for bio-based and sustainable raw materials, to create eco-friendly and low-carbon footprint solutions. Both have set targets to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

“Our sustainable principles will not only be reflected in our personal care products, but also in the packaging and development of other products,” said Zheng.

“We are working closely in the field of sustainable development and walking steadily towards realizing our slogan of Dedicated to Beauty,” said Pan.
