ByteDance's Volcano Engine to Open Source Multimedia Processing Framework ByteDance's Volcano Engine to Open Source Multimedia Processing Framework

(Yicai) Aug. 24 -- Volcano Engine said the unit of Chinese tech giant ByteDance will open source its multimedia processing framework co-developed with Nvidia, in addition to releasing self-developed chips for video encoding and decoding.

Compared with central processing unit chips with general-purpose computing power, Volcano Engine’s new chip only supports video codec tasks and has higher computing power in specific application scenarios, according to sources at the two developers.

The Babit MultiMedia Framework uses CPU, graphics processing unit, and special chips for video encoding and decoding. It needs less computing, storage, and transmission bandwidth for video network services and can meet demand from the explosive growth in video apps and data.

The BMF can overcome the shortcomings of existing commonly-used frameworks, such as a single language interface, inflexible scheduling and expansion, and high development threshold, Wang Xiaowei, senior computing specialist at Nvidia, told Yicai.

The framework can also better adapt to new application scenarios in the artificial intelligence era, Wang noted.
