(Yicai) Oct. 17 -- The first electric vehicle from major Chinese carmaker Chery Automobile will also be the first EV to use the new superfast charging battery that Contemporary Amperex Technology brought to market in August.
Equipped with CATL’s Shenxing battery, the Exeed Sterra is due to go on sale in the first quarter of next year, the two firms said yesterday. The pair also plan to jointly explore markets in Europe, the Middle East, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and North America, CATL noted.
The Shenxing battery, which uses lithium iron phosphate as the cathode material, can deliver a 400-kilometer driving range after a 10-minute charge and more than 700 km on a single full charge. Ningde-based CATL announced the successful trial production of the battery in August and has scheduled it for mass production by the end of this year.
The battery will also be used in vehicles produced by Hozon Auto and Avatr Technology, the high-end smart EV brand of Changan Automobile and backed by Huawei Technologies, CATL pointed out.
The Exeed Sterra is expected to be priced at about CNY300,000 (USD41,010). Its main rivals are the BYD Tang, Tesla's Model Y, and the Xpeng G9.
