(Yicai Global) Nov. 14 -- Chinese gold miner Shandong Humon Smelting will team up with a unit of Chilean state-owned copper mining firm Codelco to turn arsenic-containing waste into raw materials for new technologies.

Humon Smelting and EcoMetales signed a cooperation agreement on Nov. 12 to join hands to refine arsenic-bearing ores into alloys and products, as well as promote their use, the Yantai-based metal firm said in a statement on Nov. 13. Arsenic compounds can be used for lead-acid batteries and semiconductors.

Constraints in processing arsenic are limiting the metal smelting industry, so market players need to find ways to upgrade their production capacity, the statement added.

The pair is also interested in setting up a research lab with international partners for the cause.
