(Yicai Global) Oct. 30 -- China Mobile Communications Corp., one of China's big three state-owned telecoms providers, will upgrade its Beijing base stations to feature Narrow-Band Internet of Things (NB-IOT) technology to provide the city with better Internet of Things coverage and lay a foundation for the construction of smart cities.

Due to the extensive communication network in the capital, the first phase of the project will mostly be conducted in urban and suburban areas and won't be complete until the end of this year. During the construction period, mobile communication services in the city may be affected, Beijing Business Today reported on Oct. 30.

As the base stations relay overlapping signals, users should not completely lose mobile signal, China Mobile said. However, they should be prepared to have a weakened signal which may prevent them accessing communication services. This will only happen temporarily and in certain areas at certain times, the firm added.

The telecoms provider will take all possible measures to lessen the impact on users, it added, saying that users will still be able to use fixed-line telephones and broadband without a hitch.
