(Yicai Global) May 23 -- Customs officials in the Chinese port city of Dalian have ordered the return of 688 tonnes of waste, believed to have been smuggled into the country, back to where it originated, Xinhua News Agency reported today.

The aluminum dross, which was accompanied by fake documents, was seized late last year, according to Dalian Customs. Suspects have been detained and a further investigation is underway. The report did not say where the waste came from.

China began importing waste as a source of raw materials in the 1980s and was the world's largest importer for years.

But given rising public awareness of the need for environmental protection and the nation's green development drive, the government decided to phase out and halt such imports by the end of 2019. An exception is made for materials that cannot be substituted.
