(Yicai Global) Dec. 27 -- China Telecom Corporation Limited [HKG:0728; NYSE:CHA], one of China's three big communication operators, plans to carry out 5G experiment in several cities to get prepared for the trial commercial use in 2019 and the subsequent large-scale commercial application, Liu Guiqing, vice general manager of the company said yesterday.

China Telecom is one of the important members for the formulation of the 5G standard. By the end of November, the group participated in 21 5G projects in a global telecom body and International Telecommunication Union, submitted over 300 papers, and acquired 120 patents for technology protection.

The first edition of 5G new air interface international standard has been finished on schedule, announced 'The 3rd Generation Partnership Project,' also known as 3GPP, international umbrella organization for telecommunications standard development associations, at a major telecom conference held in Lisbon, Portugal, on Dec. 21. The introduction of the standard has laid foundation for the large-scale 5G experiment and commercial application, chinanews.com reported.

Air interface refers to a kind of technical code used to define the radio wave link between terminal equipment and wireless network equipment.

Another two major operators in China, China Mobile Ltd. [HKG:0941; NYSE:CHL] and China United Network Communications Ltd. [SHA:600050] (China Unicom), also participated in formulation of the 5G new interface international standard. The two companies are expected to achieve large-scale commercial application of 5G by 2020.
