China to Take Measures to Prevent Virus Spread During Peak Travel Season China to Take Measures to Prevent Virus Spread During Peak Travel Season

(Yicai Global) Jan. 9 -- China is striving to take protective measures in crowded transport hubs such as railway stations, airports and city transit systems during the peak travel period of China's Spring Festival holiday that falls at the end of this month.

These prophylactic steps over the traditional lunar new year celebration, which unleashes the world's largest annual human migration, include monitoring any signs of potential infection as well as disinfection of facilities and surfaces that come into contact with the mobile masses, Wang Yang, chief engineer of China's Ministry of Transport, said in a press briefing today.

The central city of Wuhan recently reported the outbreak of a mysterious flu-like strain, with a total of 59 viral pneumonia cases logged by late Jan. 6. Seven patients are in serious condition and eight have recovered and been discharged from hospital as of today, according to local health authorities.

No cases of contagion have been reported among China's travelers thus far, China's Civil Aviation Administration and China State Railway Group have both announced.

Preliminary lab results showed a new-type coronavirus to be the culprit behind the Wuhan viral pneumonia, announced Xu Jianguo, a Chinese expert who led the team that evaluated the pathogen test results.

Coronaviruses are common virus that cause infection of the nose, sinuses or throat. Most are not dangerous, but some, like the SARS virus that swept the world in the winter of 2002-2003, have a 10 percet fatality rate. The name corona ('crown') describes their circular structure with radiating filaments.
