(Yicai Global) Aug. 17 -- China's largest online travel platform Trip.Com Group will sell travel products on e-commerce giant JD.Com's platform over the next eight months, based on their new partnership.

The pair penned an agreement yesterday under which Trip.Com will offer JD.Com competitive pricing of its real-time inventory while the retail partner will give the former access to its user traffic, the Paper reported. The two platforms have a combined number of more than 400 million users, as of now.

The Beijing-based online retail partner has dipped its toes into the world of travel before. It formed Trip.JD.Com in 2014 to sell transportation and tourism services. JD.Com also bought USD350 million worth of rivaling travel agency Tuniu's shares in 2015 but this June, it unloaded CNY458 million (USD65.9 million) worth of them amid the Covid-19 pandemic that has been devastating for the tourism sector.

Partnering with Shanghai-based Trip.Com should be relatively straight-forward. "JD.Com is actually synchronizing Trip.Com's data and thus does not need to build a travel platform by itself," an insider with knowledge of the deal said to the Paper, adding that the e-commerce platform serves as a gateway while the underlying frameworks are built by the travel agency.
