(Yicai Global) Nov. 21 -- Chinese families deemed well off or wealthier hold combined assets worth CNY133 trillion (USD19.5 trillion), around one and a half times the national gross domestic product last year.

The list includes over 7.1 million families, each with minimum assets of CNY6 million (USD880,000) in 2017, according to the Hurun Research Institute's Wealth Report 2018, published yesterday. Some 80 percent of families are from Chinese mainland.

The report, based on families on the Chinese mainland and in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, counted

-  4.9 million well-off families (assets of CNY6 million or more), 280,000 more than the previous year;

-  two million high-net-worth families (assets of CNY10 million or more), up 150,000 from the previous year;

-  133,000 ultra-high-net-worth families (assets of CNY100 million or more), 12,000 more than 2016; and

-  89,000 international ultra-high-net-worth families (assets of USD30 million or more), 10,000 more than a year earlier.

The top five cities by families per category were the same across the board, all in the same order: Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. The capital had 696,000 well-off, 294,000 high-net-worth, 19,900 ultra-high-net-worth and 13,500 international ultra-high-net-worth families.

Some 60 percent of all high-net-worth families included entrepreneurs while the proportion of real estate speculators fell 5 percentage points to 10 percent. A fifth included senior executives at large conglomerates or multinationals who own company shares and high salaries.

Entrepreneurs made up a larger portion of ultra-high-net-worth families at 80 percent, while 15 percent were real estate investors -- unchanged from a year earlier. Five percent were individual stock traders.
