(Yicai Global) Oct. 24 -- Zhengye Technology’s shares soared after the Chinese supplier of industrial testing gear announced a CNY5 billion (USD689 million) foray into the photovoltaic sector by building its first plant to make high-efficiency solar cells and panels.

Zhengye [SHE: 300410] closed up 6.6 percent at CNY11.70 (USD1.61) today, after its stock price earlier surged as much as 8.4 percent.

The Guangdong province-based company plans to set up a joint venture with Jingdezhen High-Tech Industry Development Zone and two other investors to oversee the construction and operation of the project in eastern city of Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, it said late yesterday. Zhengye will own a 40 percent stake and a 51 percent voting right of the JV.

The project is another important milestone in the firm’s expansion into the new energy business, helping boost its sustainable development capabilities and core competitiveness, Zhengye said.

The plant will turn out heterojunctions with intrinsic thin layer, a new type of solar cell, as well as PV modules, the firm added. HIT solar cells, whose light-energy conversion efficiency outperforms that of traditional cells, are a new product with a growing market share.

The project will have an annual capacity of 5 gigawatts of PV modules and 8 GW of solar cells once all three phases are completed, Zhengye said, adding that the first phase will begin construction next January and operations by the end of next year. The JV shareholders will determine the schedule for the second and third phases at a later stage.
