China’s Cosmetics Sales Top CNY1.1 Trillion for First Time China’s Cosmetics Sales Top CNY1.1 Trillion for First Time

(Yicai) Jan. 22 -- Sales of cosmetics in China exceeded CNY1.1 trillion (USD143.6 billion) for the first time last year, with domestic brands dominating the world’s largest consumer market for such products.

Cosmetics sales rose 2.8 percent to just over CNY1.1 trillion in 2025 from the previous year, according to data released by the China Association of Fragrance, Flavour and Cosmetic Industries on Jan. 20.

Chinese brands took half of the domestic market for the first time in 2022, with their share continuing to grow since, reaching 53 percent in 2023, 55 percent in 2024, and 57 percent last year.

Chinese cosmetics saw a peak in explosive growth last year, multiple companies recently told Yicai. The number of domestic beauty-related firms, covering the upstream and downstream of the supply chain, including raw material suppliers, packaging suppliers, brand owners, and operators, rushing to go public was in the double digits, they noted.

Using the top 1,000 brands by online sales as an example, Chinese brands dominated the market with sales of almost CNY268.9 billion (USD38.6 billion), followed by French rivals with CNY75.5 billion (USD10.8 billion). US brands with CNY55 billion, Japanese brands with CNY29.9 billion, and South Korean brands with CNY18.7 billion round up the top five.

Chinese cosmetics consumption is characterized by a significant concentration of consumers at two ends, with demand for great-value-for-money products priced below CNY300 (USD43.08) and premium products priced above CNY1,000 (USD143.60) expanding, according to the association.

Sales in the sub-CNY300 price range accounted for 59 percent of the total last year, while those in the above-CNY1,000 price range made up 15 percent. The CNY300 to CNY500 and CNY500 to CNY1,000 segments accounted for 16 percent and 11 percent, respectively, both declining year over year.
