(Yicai) Sept. 26 -- The international operation center of the digital yuan, founded and managed by the Digital Currency Institute of the People's Bank of China, has officially started operation in Shanghai.

The e-yuan international operation center that opened yesterday provides innovative solutions for cross-border payment and consists of a e-yuan cross-border digital payment platform, a blockchain services platform, and a digital asset platform.

The plan to build an international operation center for the digital yuan was first unveiled by PBOC Governor Pan Gongsheng at the 2025 Lujiazui Forum in Shanghai in June.

The e-yuan cross-border digital payment platform will explore the application of legal digital currency to address the issues of traditional cross-border payment, the PBOC said. The blockchain services platform will provide standardized cross-chain transaction information and on-chain e-yuan payment services for different scenarios and industry blockchain.

The digital assets platform will offer standard and ready-to-use financial-grade digital asset services and support the expansion of existing financial infrastructure businesses onto blockchain, the PBOC noted.

The international operational center of the digital yuan will continue to promote cross-border interconnection with domestic and foreign financial infrastructure, advance the international operations and financial business development of the e-yuan, and serve digital financial innovation, according to the central bank.

The PBOC is committed to providing open, inclusive, and innovative solutions to improve the global cross-border payment system, and now it has set up a preliminary e-yuan cross-border financial infrastructure system, Vice Governor Lu Lei said at a promotional event about the three platforms in Shanghai on Sept. 24.

Establishing the center in Shanghai is not only a concrete measure to facilitate cross-border payments, but it is also highly consistent with the city's efforts to become an international financial center, Lu noted.

The e-yuan international operational center and its platforms will inject strong impetus into the city's transformation into a global financial center, Wu Wei, executive vice mayor of Shanghai, said at the event.

The city will fully rely on the center's business platforms to continuously expand the application scenarios and scope of the e-yuan and enhance its internationalization level, Wu added.
