(Yicai Global) Sept. 27 -- The Chinese Academy of Sciences and leaders of Shanghai's municipal government held an unveiling ceremony for the Zhangjiang Laboratory on Sept. 27, Chinese news outlet The Paper reported.

The lab aims to become a national interdisciplinary laboratory capable of carrying out a range of functions.

Han Zheng, secretary of the Communist Party of China's Shanghai Committee, and Bai Chunli, president of the academy, revealed the laboratory's nameplate together. Bai and Ying Yong, the city mayor, delivered speeches after the unveiling.

The lab is located in the heart of Zhangjiang Science City in Shanghai. In its early days, it was used to conduct based research in photonic science, life sciences and information technology, as well as interdisciplinary research within these fields. It hopes to become a comprehensive research base with international influence in the future.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences' Shanghai Advanced Research Institute will be the legal entity used for construction of the facility, and a management committee will take charge.

The municipal government and the science academy will work together to build the lab into a national scientific and technological power that can help lead breakthroughs and development in the country, Mayor Ying said at the ceremony.
