Chinese Mainland Shares Close Down Despite Afternoon Rally

(Yicai Global) Dec. 18 -- The Chinese mainland stock markets closed down today despite an afternoon rally spurred by gold stocks.

The Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.82 percent to 2,576.65 at the close after CNY99.3 billion (USD14.4 billion) worth of shares swapped hands. The Shenzhen Composite Index was at 7,530.32, down 0.82 percent with a trading volume of CNY130.7 billion.

The ChiNext Price Index, which tracks growth enterprises in Shenzhen, closed down 0.45 percent at 1,293.34, with investors trading CNY39.9 billion worth of shares.
