(Yicai Global) Aug. 13 -- Chinese stock markets ended the day lower today as soaring gold-related shares failed to boost market sentiments.

The Shanghai Composite Index pared 0.6 percent to close at 2,797.26. The Shenzhen Component Index fell 0.9 percent to 8,902.63. The ChiNext Price Index, which tracks growth enterprises listed in Shenzhen, dropped 1 percent to 1,524.36.

Gold equities rose nearly 5 percent as the safe-haven asset's price hit a new high in over six years.
