Chinese Utility Restores Power to Macao Following Typhoon Hato Damage Chinese Utility Restores Power to Macao Following Typhoon Hato Damage

(Yicai Global) Aug. 25 -- State-owned utility China Southern Power Grid Co. has successfully restored all power to Macao after the impact of Typhoon Hato severed the grid connection between the autonomous region and the southeastern economic hub of Guangdong province.

Hato, the 13th typhoon of the season, struck land near the city of Zhuhai, Guangdong, on Aug. 23, causing two Guangdong-based CSPG substations to break down and cutting a 220-kilovolt power supply line between the grids in the province and Macao.

The utility carried out urgent repairs to resolve the power cut, with over 5,500 staff mobilized, it said.

The repair was completed at around 5.30 am on Aug. 24 with power fully restored by 9.00 am the same day.

CSPG had also made some arrangements ahead of Hato's landfall, activating its spare-capacity 110-kilovolt line. This facilitated the recovery of some 76 percent of the Guangdong-Macao power supply on the same evening that the tropical storm struck.

The firm remains in contact with relevant departments and power companies in Macao, and will continue to spare no efforts in ensuring a stable supply, it said.
