(Yicai Global) April 17 -- The electric vehicle market will follow the same development pattern as the phone industry, and 2025 will likely be the watershed year, according to Richard Yu, head of the smart cars unit of Huawei Technologies.

“No matter how successful a company is now, it may disappear in the future if it cannot seize the opportunities amid changes in the era of electric and intelligent connected vehicles,” Yu, who is also chief executive of Huawei Consumer Group, said at a launch event yesterday, Shanghai Securities News reported today.

The smart EV market resembles the smartphone market more than a decade ago, Yu said. Since the initial launch of the Apple iPhone, smartphone sales have climbed while feature phones have gradually disappeared from the market, Yu noted, adding that many leading phone makers from that time are nowhere to be seen now.

The year 2025 will be the watershed for intelligent vehicles, Yu said. In the process of moving towards the era of smart and electric cars, market competition will first focus on electrification and then on intelligentization, he said, noting that for the latter, the software will determine users’ experience.

At yesterday’s event, Shenzhen-based Huawei debuted its second-generation intelligent driving system, Huawei ADS2.0, which is not dependent on high-precision maps, and the new generation of its Harmony OS smart cockpit.

Huawei ADS2.0 will be first installed in Seres Group’s sport utility vehicle, the Aito M5, and then on the models of other automakers, Yu said. The Aito M5 will be available in 15 cities in the third quarter and another 30 in the fourth quarter, he noted.

More than 10 new car models, which are expected to hit the market between this fall and next year, have adopted Huawei’s high-grade autonomous driving system and smart cockpit, Yu added.

Since its establishment, Huawei’s Intelligent Automotive Solution business unit has invested USD3 billion in research and development, has a team of 7,000, has marketized over 30 types of smart device and delivered 2 million of them, and has joined hands with more than 300 partners, Yu said.
