(Yicai Global) Jan. 13 -- Zheng Gang, the former general manager of state-backed electric vehicle maker BAIC BJEV, attended the China EV 100 Forum recently in his new role as chief strategy officer of Huawei Technologies' intelligent auto solutions business unit.

Huawei confirmed Zheng had joined it at the three-day forum that finished up yesterday in Beijing.

The company has set up an intelligent auto solutions business unit, the firm announced in a company circular in May, saying the unit is subordinate to the Information, communications and technology management committee and at the same level as the firm's operators, enterprise and consumers business groups.

Zheng began work at BAIC BJEV as director and general manager in 2014. The company's operating revenue rose 64 times during his tenure which ended last year, and the firm's assets also climbed 47 times from 2013, Zheng left the firm in February.

The unit will provide ICT parts and solutions for intelligent cars and help automakers produce better vehicles, Huawei stated. The Shenzhen-based tech giant has embarked on cooperation with SAIC Motor, Audi, Beiqi Foton Motor, Volvo Cars and BYD in intelligent connection, fifth-generation wireless communications networks and other areas.

Huawei has its own business boundaries and will not branch out into upper applications and complete vehicles within the auto industry, a Huawei insider told Yicai Global. The company's "car-making" is actually the firm's positioning in Internet of Vehicles, and Huawei will not vie with automakers, the insider stressed. The firm's founder Ren Zhengfei has also asserted that it will never make automobiles.
