(Yicai Global) Dec. 4 -- Chinese communications equipment giant Huawei Technologies Inc. will release its 5G-capable chips in 2019 and introduce 5G smartphones the same year, Xu Zhijun, rotating chief executive, said at the Fourth World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, Zhejiang province yesterday.

Huawei's pre-commercial 5G system won an award for scientific and technological achievement at the conference, where Xu proclaimed Huawei will become a 5G pioneer next year, online technology outlet Kuai Keji reported.

5G will significantly enhance consumers' mobile internet experience, allowing users to download six-gigabyte high-definition movies in less than two seconds. The technology will also lay a solid foundation for Industry 4.0 and offer industrial-grade reliability, Xu added.

Some 26 smart projects will make their debut at the three-day conference, which ends tomorrow, covering artificial intelligence, unmanned retail and the Internet of Things. A host of well-known tech entrepreneurs, including Tim Cook, chief executive of Apple Inc. [NASDAQ:AAPL] and Jack Ma, chairman of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. [NYSE:BABA], are in attendance at the event.
