Hybrid AI Is Best for Achieving Inclusive AI, Lenovo CEO Says Hybrid AI Is Best for Achieving Inclusive AI, Lenovo CEO Says

(Yicai) Sept. 19 -- China's Lenovo Group is proceeding with the research and development of hybrid personal and enterprise artificial intelligence, which is the best way to achieve inclusive AI, according to the chief executive of the world's largest personal computer maker.

AI development is focused on two major directions, Yang Yuanqing, who is also chairman of Lenovo, said at an award ceremony for the 10th anniversary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University's 1985 CS Graduates Education & Development Fund and the Yang Yuanqing Education Fund yesterday.

One is to promote the breakthrough of AI models towards general AI through large computing power and abundant resources and the other is to facilitate the application of AI tech in various industries to achieve popularization and benefit for all, Yang noted.

Hybrid AI is a technical approach combining individual AI with enterprise AI, aiming to balance generalization and personalized needs while ensuring user data privacy.

China has huge potential in the application of AI, Yang said. Relying on its big market and complete manufacturing supply chain, "down-to-earth AI" is an important opportunity for the country's manufacturing sector to move towards the medium and high end of the global value chain, with hybrid AI the key to seizing this opportunity, he added.

Lenovo will further industry-university-research collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Yang noted, adding that they have set up joint laboratories for intelligent devices and AI, achieving remarkable results in their cooperation.

Now is a golden age for AI innovation, and it is necessary to break through new technologies at the transformer level to achieve general AI, according to Wu Fan, the executive vice dean of Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Computer Science. A university-enterprise alliance can speed up the innovation process, Wu pointed out.

Yang donated CNY10 million (USD2.3 million) to set up the 1985 CS Graduates Education & Development Fund and the Yang Yuanqing Education Fund in 2015, making them the first crowdfunding campaigns for education in Chinese universities. They have since granted CNY6.3 million (USD886,875) to 136 students and 11 teachers.
