(Yicai Global) July 20 -- Beijing Hyundai Motor Company, China affiliate of South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co., announced that its Chongqing plant in southwestern China will start operations in August. It will be the fifth plant owned by the South Korean auto giant in China.

The Chongqing production base will make compact cars and SUV models specially tailored for Chinese consumers, Hyundai said in a press release. Hyundai Motor has one plant in Changzhou in East China's Jiangsu province, and three in Beijing.

Hyundai Motor invested CNY6,22 billion (USD919 million) in the construction of the Chongqing plant, covering 1.87 million square meters. It can make 300,000 vehicles and 300,000 engines annually in full capacity. This means the total number of vehicles produced by the manufacturer in China is expected to reach 1.65 million.
