(Yicai) Sept. 14 -- The Shanghai round of the FIM Motocross World Championship attracted more than 56,000 spectators over its three-day run, which ended yesterday, setting a new attendance record since the event was first held in the Chinese megacity in 2019.

The competition featured four classes, namely MXGP, MX2, 250CC and 85CC, and brought together 33 teams and more than 90 professional riders from 22 countries and regions. Jeffrey Herlings of the Netherlands, representing the Honda HRC Petronas team, was crowned champion in the MXGP category.

The event also featured strong Chinese elements. The JHL Moto team from Chongqing made its MXGP debut as a manufacturer-backed team, becoming the first Chinese team to participate in a world-class motocross event.

And Zhang Qingtian, the son of Zhang Xue, founder of Chinese motorcycle manufacturer ZX Moto, competed in the 85cc category for young riders. ZX Moto gained prominence this year after becoming the first Chinese team to win a race in the Superbike World Championship.
