Netease Founder Calls for Internet Music Copyright Sharing, New Business Model Netease Founder Calls for Internet Music Copyright Sharing, New Business Model

(Yicai Global) April 27 -- The founder of Chinese internet giant Netease Inc. has called for internet music copyright sharing and the search for a business model that benefits musicians, users and platforms to create a "new order" of benign competition. Excessive copyright competition among industry giants is eroding the budding sector as users are showing more willingness to spend on music, Ding Lei said during the 2017 National Conference on Copyright Protection in Digital Environment, according to a report on Tech.163.com.

Ding claimed that the industry has been caught in a vicious cycle of major players enthusiastically driving up exclusive copyright fees despite running at a loss. Exclusive copyright has even replaced product innovation and user experience as the major barrier in competition.

"Users have to download a bunch of music applications and pay several times more to listen to different singers as a result of the scattered copyrights," Ding is reported to have said. "They spend the money, but get the hump." Ding blamed the bizarre exclusive copyright phenomenon for damaging user experience. He went on to point out that the fundamental purpose of music copyright protection is to safeguard the creation and spread of music. He suggested jointly building a national Big Data platform for music and called for support of a cross-platform download of online music.
