(Yicai) Jan. 26 -- Jensen Huang made a surprise visit to a wet market in Shanghai, with onlookers gathering to take photos with the founder of US chip giant Nvidia while he was buying various fruits, snacks, and other foods.

Videos circulating online showed Huang without his iconic leather jacket sampling food and sharing a laugh with a fruit stall owner at the main wet market in Lujiazui, the central business district of Shanghai, on Jan. 24. Huang bought strawberries, kumquats, and other fruits in bulk ahead of attending Nvidia's Chinese New Year party at its local office.

Shanghai is the first stop on Huang's first China trip for this year, during which he will attend several events celebrating the upcoming Lunar New Year at Nvidia offices across the country, with Beijing, Shenzhen, and Taiwan as his next stops. He visited China three times last year.

Chinese citizens were excited to see Huang, who is also chief executive of Nvidia, with many describing the meeting as "incredible," while some shared photos and wrote on social media, "You can run into the world's richest man in the graphics card market just by buying groceries in Shanghai."

Huang, a self-proclaimed "street food lover," has been spotted at markets in multiple Chinese cities during his previous visits to China. In November 2024, he was seen at a dai pai dong, a open-air food stall, in Hong Kong, drinking beer with dozens of people, including Paul Chan Mo-po, financial secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Nancy Ip Yuk-yu, president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Harry Shum, chairman of HKUST's university council, and Neil Shen, founder of Sequoia Capital.

Senior executives of major US tech giants typically arrange signature cultural itineraries during their visits to China. For example, Apple CEO Tim Cook often visits parks and art venues.
