PetroChina to Ramp Up Natural Gas Supply to Tibet Next Year PetroChina to Ramp Up Natural Gas Supply to Tibet Next Year

(Yicai Global) Aug. 15 -- PetroChina Qinghai Oilfield Co. has struck a deal with the local government in Nagqu prefecture in China's Tibet Autonomous Region to provide the area with natural gas beginning next year, the firm's parent company, state-owned China National Petroleum Corp., said online.

The move will make Nagqu the third Tibetan region to receive a natural gas supply. At present, yak dung is commonly burned as a heating fuel during winter.

The company will start piping gas next winter, the agreement outlines, and more liquid natural gas stations will be built later in order to expand the local supply network.

Nagqu is home to headstreams of some of China's major rivers, including the Yangtze, Nu, Lhasa and Yi Gong. A 'pure grazing zone,' the prefecture is located at an average altitude of over 4,500 meters and has a local population of 460,000.

The CNPC kicked off its 'natural gas for Tibet' campaign in March 2010, using the Sebei gas field as the main source. It began supplying gas to the Tibetan capital Lhasa in 2011 and Shigatse in 2016 and more than 70 million cubic meters have been piped to the autonomous region to date.
