(Yicai Global) Dec. 15 -- Chinese electronics manufacturer Goertek Inc. [SHE:002241] will partner US telecommunications stalwart Qualcomm Inc. [NYSE:QCOM] to build an innovation center in Qingdao, Shandong province to boost development of the city's Internet of Things sector.

The center will be based at the International Innovation Park in Qingdao's Laoshan district, and will focus on research into smart wireless headsets, virtual and augmented reality and wearable devices, web portal 91.com reported today.

After setting up the innovation center, Goertek will exploit its technical advantages in intelligent hardware and precision parts to push forward the development of a smart hardware ecosystem with Qualcomm, Jiang Long, chief executive of the Chinese firm, said at the signing ceremony yesterday.

Laoshan is forging a leading position in the microelectronics sector along China's northern coastal belt. Industry output in the district will reach CNY10 billion (USD1.51 billion) by 2022, said Zhao Yan, district chief, adding that the new innovation center will lay the foundations for this goal.

Founded in 2001, Goertek produces microphones, loudspeakers, Bluetooth devices and portable audio products. It has already developed two VR products with Qualcomm and supplies products to HP Inc. [NYSE:HPQ], Siemens AG [FWB:SIE] and other well-known companies.
