Shanghai Launches Index Covering Seaborne Imports From 600 Global Ports Shanghai Launches Index Covering Seaborne Imports From 600 Global Ports

(Yicai Global) Nov.29 -- Shanghai Shipping Exchange has launched a new index providing real-time data on changes in import volumes from 600 shipment hubs worldwide to the eastern Chinese city that is home to the world's largest port.

China Shanghai Seaborne Import Index uses January 2017 import levels as the basis for its 100-point index, the SSE announced at the 2018 Shanghai Shipping Exchange Forum.

The index is time-sensitive, coming out on the 5th day of each month and uses an innovative data collection method. It uses big data to build an indicator model and quantify the structure of the seaborne import trade market.

China's import trade from countries along the Belt and Road has posted steady gains this year, according to the index. The Belt and Road regional index for October was 138.47 points, up 10.7 percent annually.

Data from ASEAN, Africa and other emerging markets also stood out. Southeast Asia, Central Africa and West Africa gained 150.37 points, 174.11 points and 252.34 points, respectively, in October.
