Shanghai Looks to Ramp Up Fuel-Cell Vehicle Sector, Aims for USD2 Billion Industry Output by 2020 Shanghai Looks to Ramp Up Fuel-Cell Vehicle Sector, Aims for USD2 Billion Industry Output by 2020

(Yicai Global) Sept. 21 -- Shanghai aims to gather more than 100 fuel-cell vehicle firms in the city and ramp up the annual output of the entire industrial chain to over CNY15 billion (USD2.28 billion) by 2020, according to an industry development plant recently released by the municipal government.

The city will also run pilots for fuel-cell buses and logistics vehicles in a yet-to-be-determined demonstration area, with around 3,000 vehicles involved in the program.

Annual output is set to exceed CNY100 billion by 2025, with 20,000 fuel-cell vehicles on the road and at least 10,000 special fuel-cell vehicles. Within the five years after that, it hopes to see output soar to CNY300 billion as the city becomes an international metropolis for fuel-cell vehicles.

The document also requires the government to draw on the rapid development of the industry in Shanghai by running demonstration operations, including building an application-driven development model, conducting public transit and customizing bus-sharing and time-sharing leases.

Fuel-cell vehicles are a type of electric conveyance which uses a fuel cell, instead of a battery, or in combination with a battery or supercapacitor, to power its on-board electric motor.
