Shanghai to Ban Single-Use Plastics in E-Commerce, Catering Sectors at Year End Shanghai to Ban Single-Use Plastics in E-Commerce, Catering Sectors at Year End

(Yicai Global) Sept. 29 -- Shanghai is to outlaw the manufacture, sale and use of single-use, non-degradable plastics in the catering, hospitality and e-commerce sectors from the end of this year, in line with the latest government crackdown on plastic pollution, according to the Shanghai Development and Reform Commission.

Single-use polystyrene tableware and cotton buds with a central plastic rod will no longer be available from year end. Non-degradable plastic bags will no longer be used for food packaging and for takeaway services, it added.

Disposable plastic shopping bags are to be banned across the city, including shopping malls, supermarkets, pharmacies, bookstores and exhibition halls.

The use of plastic microbeads in the production of cosmetics, cleaning and other products, is also to be forbidden.

In January, China tightened its restrictions on the production, sale and use of ultra-thin plastic shopping bags and other plastic products, according to a directive issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. The ban is to be implemented in stages over the next five years. There are only four months to go before the first phase must come into effect.

Over 20 provinces, including Guangdong, Hainan, Shaanxi and Shandong, have brought in plastic restrictions ahead of schedule.

On Sept. 11, the NDRC held a video conference to further limit plastic pollution.
