(Yicai Global) March 23 -- Shenzhen Bay Laboratory has tapped renowned Chinese structural biologist Yan Ning as its director, the Guangdong provincial lab said via WeChat.

Yan, 45, told a staff meeting yesterday that she is willing to work hard together with the Shenzhen Bay Lab’s staff and people from all walks of life who are concerned about the lab’s future to build it into a world-class scientific research institution.

Wu Yundong, Shenzhen Bay Lab’s executive vice director, expressed his full confidence in Yan’s leadership.

Born in Jinan, Shandong province, Yan graduated from Tsinghua University’s biological sciences and biotechnology department in 2000 and then pursued a doctoral degree and postdoctoral work at Princeton University.

She is a foreign academician of the US National Academy of Sciences and Academy of Arts and Sciences and won the First International Young Scientist Award organized by the US-based Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Yan was Shirley M. Tilghman Professor of Molecular Biology at Princeton, where her laboratory studied the structural and chemical basis for membrane transport and lipid metabolism.

Yan joined the faculty of Tsinghua’s School of Medicine in 2007. She announced last November that she was leaving Princeton University to set up an academy of medical sciences in Shenzhen.

Shenzhen Bay Lab is located in the heart of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
