(Yicai) Oct. 24 -- Digital transformation and smart technologies have become key drivers in upgrading the shipping industry, experts said at the North Bund Forum held in Shanghai yesterday.
But they noted that the transition faces multiple challenges in areas including regulatory frameworks, infrastructure requirements, technological maturity, investment needs, and management reform and adaptation.
"The maritime sector faces numerous challenges due to its long industrial chain and complex structure," said Zhao Yan, vice president of the China Classification Society, while noting that digital transformation has become essential for the industry to adapt to new development trends.
The industry's digital shift is primarily in four areas, Zhao said. They are the application of artificial intelligence, digital twin technology, high-throughput real-time data transmission, and data security. These technologies are revolutionizing traditional vessel design and production, as well as operational management.
Despite China's significant progress in shipping and shipbuilding, technological capability and market share, the country still lags behind in some areas, such as main engine systems, information systems and automation, said Xu Zuyuan, former vice minister of transport.
He emphasized the need to enhance the effectiveness of fundamental digital systems in shipping and shipbuilding to facilitate traditional industry transformation.
Xu called for efforts to break down industry barriers, as well as joint research into common technologies, optimized policies, further technological upgrades, and regulatory frameworks that align with emerging sectors.
Yi Jiyong, deputy director of the ministry’s water transport bureau, stressed the importance of promoting technological innovation and breakthrough technologies to enhance intelligent operation management in shipping. He also emphasized strengthening new technology application scenarios and accelerating the coordinated development of smart ports, smart waterways, and intelligent vessels.
The North Bund Forum, an annual gathering for the global shipping industry, ran from Oct. 22 to 24.
