Spider-Man Sets IMAX China Opening Weekend Record for Single Character Superhero Film(Yicai) Aug. 3 -- Spider-Man: Brand New Day has delivered the biggest opening weekend ever for a single-superhero film on IMAX screens in China, according to IMAX China, the exclusive operator of the large-format cinemas in the country.
The new film from Sony Pictures and Marvel has grossed more than CNY130 million (USD19.2 million) at the IMAX box office in China since its release on July 29, delivering IMAX China new records for both opening day and opening weekend, the Shanghai-based firm announced today.
IMAX theatres accounted for 16 percent of the movie's nationwide box office in the period, with only about 1 percent of total screenings.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day also set a new record for IMAX's biggest opening day for a Hollywood release in China since Avengers: Endgame in 2019, earning USD1.2 million, equal to about one-third of the movie's midnight gross takings nationwide, IMAX China noted.
“This landmark performance once again demonstrates IMAX's unique ability to elevate great storytelling into must-see theatrical events, while underscoring the Chinese market's enduring appetite for event cinema,” IMAX China's Chief Executive Daniel Manwaring said.
“This powerful opening further fuels our momentum through the rest of the summer season, backed by a strong content pipeline ahead,” Manwaring said.
