(Yicai Global) Aug. 10 -- Tiger Qie, who recently resigned as vice president of Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing, will soon join Tencent Holdings as the VP of its Platform and Content Group, responsible for search algorithms and data processes, according to financial media LatePost.

Qie’s appointment will help bolster the Shenzhen-based firm’s strengths in technological research and development and data construction. The company has long been criticized for paying too much attention to the overall user experience, which has somewhat hindered the development of some of its businesses.

"The current trend is to make decisions based on data. This change of thinking is difficult for old employees, so new blood is needed to bring changes," said a company insider.

Tencent’s PCG is responsible for the development of most of the firm’s apps and the integration of its social platforms, such as QQ and QZone, with its traffic platforms such as its App Store and Browsers with its content platforms, including news, videos, sports, live broadcasts and movies.

The PCG is undergoing a general overhaul, the insider said. It is implementing a wave of technological upgrades, promoting the use of algorithms, making decisions based on data and promoting business growth, an insider said.

It has also attracted a lot of top talent in the past year, including Zhang Huayu from US multimedia messaging app SnapChat, Dong Youchao from US photo and video sharing platform Instagram and Jiang Xirong from US ride-hailing giant Uber.

Qie worked for US tech giant Google for 12 years, rising through the firm to eventually become global technical director, before joining China's cross-border e-commerce firm Little Red Book in 2015 as Chief Technology Officer. He joined Didi Chuxing in 2018 as VP, responsible for the two core technical departments of marketing and mapping.
