Volkswagen China Unveils New Integrated Tech Stack(Yicai) Oct. 30 -- Volkswagen China has launched VEGA, an integrated technology stack developed by the Chinese team of the German auto giant, making it the only foreign carmaker in the country with a complete in-house tech matrix.
Volkswagen China's local engineering team spearheaded the development of VEGA, which comprises three core components: Compact Main Platform, China Electronic Architecture, and advanced driver-assistance systems, the company announced on Oct. 28. The parent firm is accelerating the rollout of China-developed technologies to more overseas markets, with plans to initially deploy the solution in South America by 2030, followed by expansions to South Africa and others.
The deep integration of the CMP and CEA will serve as the technical foundation for Volkswagen Group's next-generation model development targeting the Global South markets, as its China strategy evolves from "in China, for China" to "in China, and beyond." VEGA will enable local customized development and support multiple powertrain options, including new energy, internal combustion, and hybrid systems.
"China is a key innovation engine for Volkswagen and increasingly a product and tech hub for our global markets," noted Chief Executive Oliver Blume.
The launch of VEGA also marks a large-scale transfer of product decision-making and definition authority from Volkswagen's headquarters to the Chinese unit. The move aims to recapture market share in China, where its footprint has shrunk in recent years, and harness mature vehicle development tech and a supply chain infrastructure refined in the country to seize new growth opportunities in emerging Global South markets.
