World's Biggest Legoland to Open in Shanghai on July 5 World's Biggest Legoland to Open in Shanghai on July 5

(Yicai) May 7 -- Legoland Shanghai Resort, the world's biggest theme park focused on the plastic toy bricks produced by Denmark's The Lego Group, will open on July 5.

The annual pass and the hotel package that includes trial operation tickets for the new Legoland, located in Shanghai's Jinshan district and covering 318,000 square meters, went on sale early today, according to UK entertainment giant Merlin Entertainments, the park's operator.

The new Legoland will be the first in China and the 11th worldwide. It includes a theme park and a 250-room Lego-themed hotel designed for children between the ages of two and 12. It offers 75 interactive attractions, performances, and play areas across eight themed zones, alongside thousands of Lego models built with over 85 million bricks.

Legoland Shanghai Resort will implement a six-tier pricing system, it announced on April 2. Adult tickets will range from CNY319 (USD44.20) during low seasons to CNY599 (USD83) on special peak days, while children's tickets will range from CNY255 to CNY479, with special rates for seniors and people with disabilities.

In comparison, Shanghai Disneyland Resort charges CNY356 for children and CNY475 for adults on standard days, with holiday rates reaching up to CNY539 for children and CNY719 for adults.

China is the world's second-largest market for theme parks, which is expected to continue to grow. Two more Legolands are under construction in the country: one in Shenzhen, southern Guangdong province, and the other in the Tianfu New Area in Chengdu, southwestern Sichuan province.

Merlin Entertainments, the world's second-biggest entertainment firm behind The Walt Disney Company, was one of the first global companies to open themed amusement facilities in China, starting with the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Shanghai in 2006.

Shanghai's vast population and the strong regional economy around the city have solidified its status as a prime destination for global theme parks. In addition to Disneyland and Legoland, local tourism and hospitality firm Jinjiang International Holdings allied with Warner Bros. Entertainment to open a Harry Potter Studio Tour in 2027.
