(Yicai) Nov. 27 -- Zootopia 2 started screenings in Chinese cinemas by raking in CNY228 million (USD32.2 million) on its opening day, with the flick by Walt Disney Pictures breaking the record for the highest single-day gross by a foreign animated movie in China.

The Chinese box office of Zootopia 2, which also released in North America yesterday, is expected to exceed CNY2.4 billion (USD338.9 million), according to analytics platform Maoyan Pro.

Zootopia 2 accounted for almost 67 percent of all screenings in the Chinese mainland yesterday, while the original English-language version contributed CNY179 million to its box office. Its presale box office topped CNY300 million late Nov. 25, breaking the record for an animated film in the country.

The first Zootopia movie was released in 2016, grossing CNY1.5 billion in China, making it the country's highest-grossing foreign animation. In addition, Shanghai Disney Resort opened the world's first Zootopia-themed attraction on Dec. 20, 2023.
