The important reason for this difference may be related to the difference in the size of the silicon chip/battery chip. A number of industry insiders told Caixin News Agency that the power increase should be achieved through technological upgrading. With the determination of the component size, the power of the component will return to the process of slow increase in the future without the blessing of the new process.

In July 2020, the 600w + PV Open Innovation Ecological Alliance, represented by Trine Solar, Oriental Sunrise and TCL Central, was established. One of the typical characteristics of alliance enterprises is the widespread use of 210mm silicon wafers. According to industry insiders, in the era of highly homogeneous PERC batteries, battery efficiency conversion was close to the bottleneck, and before the new battery technology matured, the head component factory urgently needed new differentiated products to open the market.

In 2019, Central launched 210mm size silicon wafers, the market gradually formed a 182 camp represented by Longi, as well as Trina Solar, Oriental Sunrise and other 210 camps.

But the pace of component "increase" is not only this, especially after a variety of N-type battery technology is mature and mass-delivered, the component power is further improved, and 700W becomes "natural". In August this year, Trina Solar announced a new generation of N-type i-TOPCon technology, superimposed on the application of 210 product technologies, and its supreme N-type 700W + components were mass produced ahead of schedule.

Tris Solar told Caixin that 700W + products are especially popular with customers of large ground power stations, and the supply of this product is in short supply. Not only that, there is also such a trend in household roofs and industry and commerce. Domestic customers also tend to accept ultra-high-power components on the roof. Through the advancement of advanced technology and BOS cost reduction, higher benefits will be brought.

In terms of heterojunction, due to the advantage of higher conversion efficiency, the component power is relatively higher under the condition of the same version. In September this year, the first piece of Huasheng New Energy Xuancheng Phase III high-efficiency heterojunction component project was successfully rolled off the production line, and the highest power component in the first batch of mass-produced heterojunction components reached 720W W. With the blessing of heterojunction and 210 silicon chips, in November this year, Huasheng New Energy announced that with TÜV SÜD certification, Himalayan G12-132 version heterojunction module has an output power of 750.544W and a conversion efficiency of 24.16. The product specification shows that the component size is 2384 × 1303 and the component weight is 38.7kg.

according to tongwei shares, on December 21, after TÜV SÜD's test, the front power of tongwei THC component reached 755.03W and the conversion efficiency exceeded 24.31 under the standard size of 2384*1303mm. In January this year, the power of Tongwei HJT module reached 720W for the first time, exceeding 755W by the end of December, and the power increased by 35W in one year.

Size increase may not be the optimal solution

In the PERC battery era, since each battery has the same technology, the means to increase the power of the component is mainly achieved by increasing the size of the silicon chip/component. Some people in the industry commented to the Caixin News Agency reporter that there are two ways to increase power: one is the upgrade of battery technology, and higher photoelectric conversion efficiency brings an increase in actual power generation; the other is to increase the battery arrangement, which is a This is a relatively simple and crude method, and the pros and cons are obvious. "If there is no size standard, the existing components and a column of batteries can easily achieve 800W, but this is meaningless." The person thinks.

How to strike a balance between the two methods is also the direction that component factories continue to explore. In the dispute about the size, the rectangular silicon chip becomes the "compromise" way. In April 2022, Trine Solar launched the silicon wafer product 210R, or 182mm * 210mm specification, which provides the basis for the uniform standard of components.

in July this year, nine first-line component enterprises, including longji green energy, jingao technology (002459.SZ), trina solar energy and xiexin integration (002506.SZ), issued a joint statement, reaching a consensus on the standardization of the size of the new generation of rectangular silicon components, namely 2382mm * 1134mm.

So far, the width of the mid-size component has been determined to be 1.1 meters, which is considered to be a suitable size for single-person lift transportation. However, since this version is mainly suitable for 182mm silicon chips, this size battery chip can realize the traditional 6-column battery design. In contrast, 210mm size silicon wafers/cells need to adopt 5-column cell design to adapt to the matching of 1.1 m photovoltaic glass and frame and other auxiliary materials. This is undoubtedly "limiting" its play for the main push 210mm size component factory.

therefore, after the 1.3-meter-wide glass and other auxiliary materials are fully supplied, the 210 camp component factory can increase the width size to 1.3 meters, I .e. realize the 6-row battery arrangement. Based on the double blessing of battery efficiency improvement and battery chip increase, the photovoltaic industry officially welcomed the 700W + alliance in December this year. It is agreed that the external dimension of the component is 2384mm × 1303mm.

However, the limitations of oversize are also obvious. According to Sun Le, under the 210 silicon wafer size design, the width of the traditional six-row battery design module will reach 1.3 meters, which has exceeded the ability of a single construction worker to hold and lift with both arms. In addition, since the 60 and 66 versions do not match the container width, the components are transported in an upright manner, which also increases the risk of loss during transit due to the increased center of gravity. At the same time, in outdoor power stations, 210 components have to face more stringent resistance to wind resistance and deformation pressure.

Sun Le believes that the industry has basically reached a consensus on the size standard, but the size and technical route of the silicon wafer are still uncertain. Next year, the competition of component factories should focus on technology. How to achieve better battery passivation technology to achieve higher component power in the same area is the direction of industry progress.
