On February 29, the National Bureau of Statistics released the Statistical Bulletin on National Economic and Social Development in the People's Republic of China 2023. According to the communique, China's per capita GDP in 2023 was 89358 yuan, an increase of 5.4 percent over the previous year; the gross national income was 125129.7 billion yuan, an increase of 5.6 percent over the previous year; at the end of the year, the national population was 1409.67 million, of which 864,810,000 were 16-59 years old (including those under 60 years old), accounting for 61.3 percent; at the end of the year, the urbanization rate of the national resident population was 66.16, an increase of 0.94 percentage.
Last year, GDP per capita increased by 5.4 percent over the previous year, and gross national income increased by 5.6 percent.
According to preliminary calculations, the annual GDP was 126058.2 billion billion yuan, an increase of 5.2 percent over the previous year. Among them, the added value of the primary industry was 8975.5 billion yuan, an increase of 4.1 percent over the previous year; the added value of the secondary industry was 48258.9 billion yuan, an increase of 4.7 percent; and the added value of the tertiary industry was 68823.8 billion yuan, an increase of 5.8 percent. The added value of the primary industry accounted for 7.1 per cent of GDP, the added value of the secondary industry was 38.3 per cent, and the added value of the tertiary industry was 54.6 per cent. Final consumption expenditure drove GDP growth by 4.3 percentage points, gross capital formation drove GDP growth by 1.5 percentage points, and net exports of goods and services drove GDP downward by 0.6 percentage points. On a quarterly basis, GDP grew 4.5 per cent in the first quarter, 6.3 per cent in the second quarter, 4.9 per cent in the third quarter and 5.2 per cent in the fourth quarter. The annual per capita GDP was 89358 billion yuan, an increase of 5.4 percent over the previous year. The gross national income was 125129.7 billion billion yuan, an increase of 5.6 percent over the previous year. The total labor productivity was 161615 yuan/person, up 5.7 over the previous year.
Over 60% of Population Aged 16-59
The communiqué shows that the country's population at the end of the year was 1409.67 million, a decrease of 2.08 million from the end of the previous year, of which 932.67 million were permanent urban residents. There were 9.02 million births in the whole year, with a birth rate of 6.39 ‰. There were 11.1 million deaths, with a mortality rate of 7.87 ‰. The natural growth rate is -1.48 ‰.
from the perspective of population structure, there are 720,320,000 men, accounting for 51.1 per cent, 689,350,000 women, accounting for 48.9 per cent, 932,670,000 people in urban areas, accounting for 66.2 per cent, and 477,000,000 people in rural areas, accounting for 33.8 per cent.
from the perspective of age composition, there are 247,890,000 people aged 0-15 (including under 16 years old), accounting for 17.6 per cent; 864,810,000 people aged 16-59 (including under 60 years old), accounting for 61.3 per cent; 296,970,000 people aged 60 and above, accounting for 21.1 per cent, of whom 216,760,000 people aged 65 and above, accounting for 15.4 per cent.
At the end of the year, 740.41 million people were employed nationwide, of which 470.32 million were employed in urban areas, accounting for 63.5 per cent of the country's employed. In the whole year, 12.44 million new jobs were created in cities and towns, 380000 more than the previous year. The national urban survey unemployment rate averaged 5.2 per cent throughout the year. At the end of the year, the national urban unemployment rate was 5.1 per cent. The total number of migrant workers nationwide was 297.53 million, an increase of 0.6 percent over the previous year. Among them, 176.58 million migrant workers, an increase of 2.7; local migrant workers 120.95 million, a decrease of 2.2.
National foreign exchange reserves increase by $110.3 billion
For the year, consumer prices rose 0.2 per cent over the previous year. Industrial producer prices fell by 3.0 per cent. Industrial producer purchase prices fell by 3.6 per cent. Producer prices for agricultural products fell by 2.3 per cent. In December, among the 70 large and medium-sized cities, the number of cities where the sales price of newly-built commercial housing rose year-on-year was 20, 2 were flat, and 48 were down; the number of cities where the sales price of second-hand housing rose year-on-year was 1., 69 fell.
At the end of the year, the country's foreign exchange reserves were 3238 billion US dollars, an increase of 110.3 billion US dollars over the end of the previous year. The average exchange rate of RMB for the whole year was 7.0467 yuan to the US dollar, a depreciation of 4.5 per cent over the previous year.
The output of new energy vehicles increased by more than 30% over the previous year
New growth momentum. In the whole year, the added value of the equipment manufacturing industry increased by 6.8 over the previous year, accounting for 33.6 percent of the added value of industries above scale; the added value of high-tech manufacturing industry increased by 2.7 percent, accounting for 15.7 percent of the added value of industries above scale. The output of new energy vehicles was 9.443 million, up 30.3 percent over the previous year; the output of solar cells (photovoltaic cells) was 0.54 billion kilowatts, up 54.0 percent; the output of service robots was 7.833 million, up 23.3 percent; and the output of 3D printing equipment was 2.789 million, up 36.2 percent. Among the service industries above designated size, the operating income of strategic emerging service industry enterprises increased by 7.7 over the previous year. Investment in high-tech industries increased by 10.3 percent over the previous year, and investment in technological transformation of the manufacturing industry increased by 3.8 percent. E-commerce turnover was 46827.3 billion yuan, up 9.4 over the previous year. Online retail sales of 15426.4 billion yuan, an increase of 11.0 over the previous year. In the whole year, 32.73 million new business entities were established, and 27000 new enterprises were established every day.

The communiqué shows that the pace of urban-rural integration and coordinated regional development is steady. At the end of the year, the urbanization rate of the national permanent population was 66.16, an increase of 0.94 percentage points over the end of the previous year. In terms of different regions, the GDP of the eastern region was 65208.4 billion billion yuan, an increase of 5.4 percent over the previous year; the GDP of the central region was 26989.8 billion billion yuan, an increase of 4.9 percent; the GDP of the western region was 26932.5 billion billion yuan, an increase of 5.5 percent; and the GDP of the northeast region was 5962.4 billion billion yuan, an increase of 4.8 percent. For the whole year, the GDP of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region was 10444.2 billion yuan, an increase of 5.1 percent over the previous year; the GDP of the Yangtze River Economic Belt was 58427.4 billion yuan, an increase of 5.5 percent; and the GDP of the Yangtze River Delta region was 30504.5 billion yuan, an increase of 5.7 percent. Major regional strategies such as the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin have been further promoted.
60% of monitoring urban air quality standards
Last year, China's green and low-carbon transformation was further promoted. The annual national gross domestic product carbon dioxide emissions were the same as the previous year. Hydropower, nuclear power, wind power, solar power and other clean energy power generation 3190.6 billion kwh, an increase of 7.8 over the previous year. Among the 339 cities at prefecture level and above monitored, 59.9 per cent of the cities met the air quality standards and 40.1 per cent did not meet the standards. Among the 3641 national surface water assessment sections, the proportion of sections with good water quality (Ⅰ ~ Ⅲ) is 89.4, the proportion of sections with Class IV is 8.4, the proportion of sections with Class V is 1.5, and the proportion of sections with poor Class V is 0.7.
