(Yicai Global) Dec. 28 -- The Chinese government intends to make the country's southern island province Hainan into a globally influential tourism destination by 2035.
The project of making Hainan into a top pick among international holiday destinations, will make great progress by 2020, be basically completed by 2025, and expand into a global scale by 2035, the National Development and Reform Commission said in its plan that was released today.
The project will integrate sports, including horse racing, paragliding, as well as motor and water sports, with tourism. Visitors may indulge with lottery but casinos, such as in Macau, are not in the cards.
Shares of several Hainanese firms have reached the daily upper limit of 10 percent rises today. Some of them are logistics firm Hainan Haiqi Transportation Group [SHA:603069], Hainan Strait Shipping [SZ: 002320], auto parts supplier Hainan Drinda Automotive Trim [SZ: 002865], motorcycle maker Sundiro Holding [SZ: 000571] and hotel operator HNA Innovation [SHA:600555].
China turned Hainan into a pilot free trade zone in October to boost spending. It is 30 years since the island became a special economic zone.
