(Yicai Global) Oct. 11 -- The 14th China International Small and Medium Enterprises Fair (CISMEF) kicked off in the southern city of Guangzhou, Guangdong province, yesterday, with over 649 foreign companies from 32 different countries and regions in attendance.

A number of international organizations and 2,300 domestic firms were also present at the event

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the South African Department of Small Business Development and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization joined forces to host the event, which spans a 150,000-square-meter exhibition area housing 6,000 standard-sized booths, CRI Online reported.

CISMEF is running several themes, including intelligent manufacturing, 'Internet Plus,' smart homes and energy saving and environmental protection. The event is hosting a small- to medium-sized enterprise forum, financing seminars, innovative and entrepreneurial competitions and a special activity relating to the Belt and Road Initiative.

South African firms made up the largest segment, with over 50 companies from a range of industries, including services, agricultural processing, renewable energy, tourism and food. They combined to cover 1,000 square meters of exhibition space.
