(Yicai Global) May 11 -- More and more young Chinese who are looking for work are trying to get into the online performance industry, which includes the livestreaming and short video fields, according to a newly released report.

Major Chinese livestreaming and short video platform companies received half a million job applications last year, most of which were from youngsters, Beijing Daily reported today, citing a report from the Online Performance Live-Streaming Branch of the China Association of Performing Arts and other institutions.

China's online performance industry directly or indirectly brought more than 100 million job opportunities in 2022, according to the report, and had revenue of CNY199.2 billion (USD28.7 billion) last year, up 8 percent from the year before.

The report is based on first-hand studies on and interviews with 30 major livestreaming and short video platform firms and multi-channel network institutions in China’s online performance space, of which it reviews the scale, development orientation, and innovation achievements.

Over 150 million livestreaming accounts were opened in China last year, up 7.1 percent from 2021, the report showed. More and more livestreamers are educated, young, and professional.

The total number of short-video creator accounts exceeded 1 billion in 2022.

As of the end of last year in China, there were 11 listed entities, about 20 mid-sized and big livestreaming platforms, and around 15 medium-sized and large short video sites.

The number of livestreaming users rose 6.7 percent to 751 million as of December from a year earlier, accounting for 70.3 percent of China's total internet industry users, according to the report. That of short video users exceeded 1 billion, increasing 8.3 percent in the period and making up almost 95 percent of all internet users.

By the end of last year, China had 6,263 commercial internet cultural institutions with online performance business qualifications, of which 1,959 were set up in the year, the report showed.
