(Yicai Global) June 8 -- Huawei Technologies has launched GaussDB, the Chinese tech giant’s fully self-developed distributed database, saying it can be used in high-end application markets, including finance, energy, and government.

“Our goal is to have the world's best database product, and we have no interest in low-end, small-capacity databases," Zhang Pingan, executive director and chief executive of Huawei Cloud, said in an interview after the Huawei Intelligent Finance Summit yesterday.

After completing GaussDB’s basic setup, Huawei has fully used the database since 2020. It is being used for the Shenzhen-based firm's internal information technology systems, core business networks in multiple industries, and in the most complex core financial business, Zhang noted.

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China's main credit system used to take 15 to 30 minutes to fully recover from a major failure, but with GaussDB it only takes two minutes, Zhang said. Many banks, insurers, brokerages, and energy companies have already successfully opened their main business systems to GaussDB, Zhang added.

“GaussDB will implement two major strategies,” said Zhang. “The first is to fully achieve the independent innovation of the database together with more financial customers, and the second is to move from finance to more critical information infrastructure industries, including government affairs and energy.”

China's database market was mainly divided between international vendors, but with the surge in demand for digital infrastructure, it has become a key battlefield for the development of many domestic manufacturers. 

Compared with conventional centralized databases, such as Oracle Database, Chinese tech firms, including Huawei Cloud, Alibaba Cloud, and Tencent Cloud, deploy distributed databases with application scenarios in the finance, internet, government, telecoms, and other sectors.
