AI Will Drive Autonomous Driving, Three Other Major Trends, Xpeng Chair Says AI Will Drive Autonomous Driving, Three Other Major Trends, Xpeng Chair Says

(Yicai) July 31 -- The power of artificial intelligence will drive the development of autonomous driving, chips, large language models, and robots, and Xpeng Motors will take on these sectors, according to the chairman of the Chinese new energy vehicle startup.

Xpeng has captured the latest technology trends and took the lead in embracing AI, He Xiaopeng said yesterday. It also launched China's first mass-produced end-to-end intelligent driving model, the neural network XNet + planning and control large model XPlanner + LLM XBrain, becoming one of the world's two carmakers to mass-produce an end-to-end model, accelerating the development of its smart driving tech, he added.

Xpeng rolled out the XOS 5.2.0 AI Tianji operation system with 484 functional upgrades, covering smart driving and intelligent car cockpit, in China yesterday. It also plans to release it in 10 countries, including Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, and France on Aug. 15.

Any intelligent driving system without an AI model will be obsoleted, He pointed out. Tech companies should focus on breakthroughs rather than only pursuing sales, he noted regarding the internal competition in the Chinese car market, the world's biggest.

According to a report released by Cherish Capital, 90 percent of more than 30 frontline experts in the self-driving industry interviewed said companies they work for have invested in developing end-to-end technologies because most tech firms believe it is difficult to bear the consequences of missing this technological revolution.

End-to-end autonomous driving is a holistic approach to autonomous driving system development in which the system takes in raw sensor data from cameras, radar, and lidar and directly outputs vehicle controls, unlike traditional systems relying on modular designs with separate components.
