Alibaba Challenges Students to Creatively Destroy Fake Goods in Contest Promoting Copyright Protection Alibaba Challenges Students to Creatively Destroy Fake Goods in Contest Promoting Copyright Protection

(Yicai Global) Sept. 14 -- Chinese internet giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. [NYSE:BABA] and state-run newspaper China Youth Daily are hosting a competition for the creative destruction and transformation of fake goods to encourage college students to participate in the protection of intellectual property rights, online news outlet Sina Tech reported on Sept. 13.

Alibaba will collect ideas on how to destroy fake products from nearly 800 colleges and universities in 21 provinces and cities nationwide over the coming month.

The competition also involves visits to the company's fake goods evidence warehouses. All of the goods to be destroyed come from these warehouses.

Alibaba began carrying out sample examinations on commodities sold on its platform in 2011 and spends CNY100 million (USD15 million) a year to buy and check fake goods. The firm stores them for more than three years as evidence for litigation before destroying them.

"We hope to encourage college students to participate in anti-counterfeiting efforts by contributing to the destruction of fake goods," said one of the competition's organizers, Qin Sen.

Alibaba also invited Yang Yong, art consulting director at Adream Foundation, to provide guidance on the works shortlisted in the competition. The best works will be auctioned, with the proceeds used to build classrooms for children.
