(Yicai Global) Aug 9 – A magnitude 7 earthquake jolted the popular tourist destination of Jiuzhaigou county in China's southwestern Sichuan province at about 9.19pm on Tuesday, killing at least five tourists and injuring more than 60 people, China Central TV reported, citing county authorities.

The quake's epicentre was initially monitored at 33.20 degrees north latitude and 103.88 degrees east longitude, according to Xinhua News. The quake was also felt in some parts of closing Gansu and Shaanxi provinces.

The Sichuan earthquake bureau said that as of 11pm on Tuesday, more than 100 tourists were trapped at a scenic site near the Jiuzhaigou National Park. The park said it had 38,799 visitors on Tuesday.

Witnesses said electricity had been cut and phone services disrupted in the area. But CCTV reports that power supply has been restored in Jiuzhaigou County and Sichuan Jiuzhaihuanglong Airport.

Local media reported that many train services passing through Jiuzhaigou had been suspended. Photos posted on social media showed a paramilitary police unit dispatched more than 200 offices to help with rescue efforts.
