(Yicai Global) Dec. 21 -- Chinese internet behemoth Baidu Inc. [NASDAQ:BIDU] will work with China Southern Power Grid Co.'s Guangdong branch to promote the application of artificial intelligence in the energy sector.

The Beijing-based firm and the state-owned power group signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Guangzhou yesterday to build customer service and energy industry tools using Baidu's AI, cloud computing and Big Data technologies, China News Service reported.

The Guangdong branch may apply Baidu's machine learning, speech recognition and image identification technologies to serve customers, save energy, promote environmental protection, dispatch power and improve operations.

That branch operated the largest provincial-level grid in China. It provides power to 100 million people in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao and is the country's first network with a system load of over 100 million kilowatts.

Supported by national policies, the industrialization and integrated application of the next generation of AI will assume a pivotal position in China's development strategy, industry insiders say. The cooperation between Baidu and China Southern Power Grid will serve as an example for the integrated advancement of AI and industry.
