Beijing to Crack Down on Social Media Used in Schools Beijing to Crack Down on Social Media Used in Schools

(Yicai Global) Jan. 30 -- Beijing will overhaul and remove any disturbing or irrelevant social media that is used in schools in the city.

The capital city will inspect all applications, chat groups, and social media official accounts that are used in primary, junior high and senior high schools by March 1, local news outlet Beijing News reported, citing a notice that the local administration published yesterday. All unauthorized apps, groups and accounts will be suspended or canceled.

Apps used in these educational institutions must not have content or links to pornography, violence, online games or commercial advertisements. They should not increase students' academic burden through exams, competitions to rankings, nor charge additional fees.

Schools and teachers are not allowed to expose any student's performance, grades or rankings online via social media. They must not send ads or fundraising-related information that are irrelevant to education. They are required to respect pupils' privacy and prohibited from comparing kids and adolescents based on family backgrounds.

The notice urges regulators to bolster control over comments and threads posted on official accounts used in schools. Schools or their personnel should not recommend unrelated accounts to students or their parents.

Any entity that breaks the law or violates the regulations will be reported to cyberspace administrations and public security departments for further inspections, the report added.
