(Yicai Global) Dec. 1 -- Canada Goose has rapidly backpedaled on its previous refusal to accept after-sales returns in China after customers complained. The storm comes just a week after the Canadian outerwear firm was fined by Chinese regulators for false advertising.

Buyers can return products and get refunds in any of Canada Goose’s mainland stores, the Toronto-based firm said on its microblogging Weibo account today.

It was a different story a few months ago. A lady surnamed Jia bought a down jacket for CNY11,400 (USD1,789.39) at an outlet in Shanghai on Oct. 27. However, once she returned home she found defects on the brand label and went back to the store to return it.

But she was refused. “All Chinese mainland stores do not accept sales returns unless otherwise stipulated by law,” the company said. Jia took the matter up with management who maintained that the “30-day no-hassle return policy” on the clothing firm’s website is not applicable in China.

Today, the Shanghai Consumer Council said it was wading into the fray. Before the meeting could take place, the head of Canada Goose’s China operator Xiji Trading, who was fined CNY450,000 (USD70,633) last week for placing misleading ads, said the chain will accept exchanges and returns.

Canada Goose’s China sales jumped 85.9 percent in the second fiscal quarter ended Sept. 26 from the same period last year, according to its latest financial report.
